mParivahan is the government's transport app for Android and iPhone, now listed in the app stores as NextGen mParivahan and published by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), the government technology agency that also standardised and rolled out the Vahan and Sarathi applications for the states. On it you can search a vehicle or driving licence record, keep your own RC and licence as QR-coded virtual copies, and use a growing set of transport services from your phone.
Parivahan Sewa India is an independent explainer, not the government Parivahan portal. It does not make or run any app, and every login, service request or payment described below happens only inside the official app or on the official Parivahan website. App features change with each update, and the status panel above this introduction lists feature changes we have checked.
What NextGen mParivahan is
NIC describes the app as a "super app" built by the transport ministry (MoRTH) with NIC. It brings together features from Vahan (vehicle registration), Sarathi (driving licences) and eChallan (traffic fines), with changes for individual states. By MoRTH's count in its Annual Report 2024-25, the app carried 75+ services and utilities, with downloads passing 11.55 crore by 31 December 2024.
It is the current store listing for mParivahan. The older mParivahan app connected to eChallan, Vahan and Sarathi through APIs and supported offline QR verification of virtual DLs and RCs. So if you are looking for a vahan app, a parivahan app, the m parivahan app or the parivahan.gov.in app, this is the one, and a search for a parivahan gov in app leads to the same NIC listing. Searches such as mparivahan gov in, m parivahan gov in or mparivahan website usually come from people hunting for a website; we could not confirm a separate mParivahan website, and the web version of these services is the Parivahan Sewa portal.
mParivahan app download: official store links only
Install the app only from the official stores. On Android, the listing is NextGen mParivahan on Google Play, with the package name com.nic.mparivahan. On iPhone, it is NextGen mParivahan on the App Store, listed as free and requiring iOS 14.0 or later.
Before you tap install, check two things on the listing: the developer is shown as the National Informatics Centre (NIC), and on Android the package name matches. The app updates often, so keep automatic updates on.
Main features of the mParivahan app
The App Store listing describes these features. Names in the Android version can differ slightly.
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Vehicle search | Shows owner name, registration date, registering authority, make and model, fuel, age, class, and insurance and fitness validity for a registration number |
| DL search | Looks up a driving licence record |
| Virtual RC and DL | Keeps your own documents on the phone, each carrying an encrypted QR |
| Report an offence or accident | Lets citizens report road offences and accidents |
| Notifications | Transport department notices |
| Office locator | RTO and traffic office locations |
| Validity by mobile number | Checks vehicle validity using your mobile number (added in a recent iPhone version) |
For what the vehicle search can and cannot reveal, see our vehicle details guide.
mParivahan login and adding your DL and RC to the dashboard
Storing your own documents needs a login with your mobile number and an OTP. A 2020 news guide to the older app describes these steps; labels may be different in NextGen mParivahan, so go by the screen.
Adding an RC
- Search your vehicle number in the RC search.
- Tap Add to Dashboard for Virtual RC.
- Log in or sign up with your mobile number and the OTP.
- Prove you own the vehicle by entering the chassis and engine number details asked for.
Adding a DL
- Enter your DL number and date of birth in the DL search.
- Tap Add to Dashboard for Virtual DL and re-enter your date of birth to confirm.
Once added, the virtual document sits on the app's dashboard with its QR code. If the RC will not add, the details you entered may not match the RTO record; the RTO or the Vahan services listed on our Vahan 4.0 guide are the place to sort that out. Our RC download guide also covers the DigiLocker route.
Are mParivahan virtual documents legally valid
Yes. MoRTH's advisory RT-11036/64/2017-MVL of 8 August 2018 directed every state and UT to accept a DL, RC and other documents shown through mParivahan or DigiLocker, treating them as legally recognised on par with originals under the IT Act, 2000. Two later rule changes back this up, according to legal news sites that reported them:
- The Fourteenth Amendment to the central rules, notified as GSR 1081(E) in 2018, lets a driver show the RC, insurance, fitness, permit, DL and PUC certificate in electronic form.
- Since 1 October 2020, an officer who has verified your document online is not allowed to insist on the paper version as well.
The same advisory says that if the app shows a valid insurance policy from the Vahan database, a paper insurance certificate is not needed, and impounding can be recorded through eChallan instead of seizing your papers. One practical caution: if the virtual RC or DL with the QR code is not in your app, or its validity has not updated, keep the physical document with you.
mParivahan online services and application status
Beyond lookups, the app offers mparivahan online services that otherwise need the website. NIC's note on the app's launch in Odisha on 23 August 2023 listed the services in the first version: duplicate RC, NOC, transfer of ownership, learner licence, duplicate DL, DL renewal and DL address change. NIC says the online services need Aadhaar authentication. Because the app carries state-specific changes, the services you see in Assam, Kerala, Bihar or Gujarat may not be identical.
We could not confirm a dedicated mparivahan application status screen inside the app. Vehicle applications can be tracked on the Vahan website by application number, as explained on our RC status guide and Vahan status page. Whatever you call it, mParivahan, m parivahan sewa or the Parivahan app, the government version is the one listed under NIC.
Parivahan mobile number update
Your mParivahan login works on your phone number, but OTPs for vehicle services on the Vahan website go to the mobile number registered for the vehicle. An outdated number means missed OTPs and missed alerts. According to a 2025 news report, MoRTH urged licence holders and vehicle owners to keep this number current using Aadhaar authentication, so that notices about fines, challans and renewal dates actually reach them.
For vehicles, Vahan citizen services includes a service labelled Update Mobile No. among its options. The precise route to it comes from press reports rather than the portal itself, so let the live menu guide you. Our Vahan 4.0 guide explains how that menu is laid out.
How to avoid fake mParivahan apps and links
- Check the publisher. The genuine app is published by the National Informatics Centre. Anything else using the mParivahan name is not the government app.
- Do not install app files sent on WhatsApp or SMS. A file forwarded in a chat is not a store install, and you have no way to check who made it. Install only from the store links above.
- Do not trust sites selling the app. The App Store lists it as free.
- Never type your bank PIN or card details into a lookup. Vehicle and DL searches do not need payment details. Pay fees only on the official Parivahan or eChallan pages the app opens.
- Keep OTPs to yourself. They are meant only for you to type into the official app or site, never to read out to a caller.

Questions people ask
Is mParivahan an official government app?
Yes. NextGen mParivahan is published by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and built for MoRTH. Check that the developer name on the store listing is NIC before installing.
Can I show mParivahan RC and DL to traffic police?
Yes. Since August 2018 MoRTH's advisory has asked state transport departments to honour documents displayed in mParivahan, and CMVR Rule 139 allows documents in electronic form. Keep the virtual RC or DL with its QR code on your dashboard; if it is missing or its validity has not updated, carry the paper document.
What is the difference between mParivahan and NextGen mParivahan?
NextGen mParivahan is the current version listed in the stores. NIC calls it a super app combining Vahan, Sarathi and eChallan features, while the older mParivahan app was described mainly around searches and offline QR verification of virtual DL and RC.
Why is my RC not showing in mParivahan?
Adding a virtual RC asks you to prove ownership with chassis and engine number details, so what you enter has to match the RTO record. If the record itself is wrong or your mobile number is outdated, ask your RTO or use the Vahan services to correct it first.
Do I need Aadhaar for mParivahan?
The 2020 steps for adding virtual documents use a mobile number and OTP login. The online services, such as duplicate RC or DL renewal, need Aadhaar authentication.
Is there an mParivahan website?
We could not confirm a separate mParivahan website. The web versions of the same services are on parivahan.gov.in, and any site asking you to log in under the mParivahan name should be treated with caution.
