RC status is the progress of any request you have made about your vehicle's registration certificate (RC), whether that is a new RC, an ownership transfer, a No Objection Certificate (NOC), a loan entry or a renewal. These requests run on Vahan, the vehicle registration software that the National Informatics Centre (NIC) set up for the road transport ministry (MoRTH), so the status lives there too.

We are an independent help guide with no government connection, so this site is not Parivahan itself; status checks, fee payments and applications are handled only on the official Vahan website or the NextGen mParivahan app. Menus and fees do change; the update panel above the first heading lists anything we have confirmed recently.

Where to check RC status on the official Vahan portal

Owners start from the Vahan homepage for citizens, hosted at vahan.parivahan.gov.in. People often type "parivahan gov in rc status" or "vahan nic rc status" into a search engine; both lead to this same Vahan system, which NIC deployed for MoRTH. You can also start from the Parivahan Sewa home page, open the vehicle services section and pick your state, which takes you into Vahan.

At the time of writing, third-party guides describe this path for an RC status check online. Button names can shift between updates, so go by what your screen shows.

  1. Open Vahan citizen services and select your state and RTO if asked.
  2. From the top menu, open Status, then Know Your Application Status.
  3. Key in the application number from your fee slip and solve the captcha.
  4. Press Submit; a View Report option then opens the report on your file.

The same screen serves the vahan rc status for Vahan service applications such as a transfer, an NOC, a duplicate RC, an address change or a renewal.

RC status check by vehicle number or by application number

Many people try an rc status check by vehicle number. The difference matters. The application status screen works on the application number, because one vehicle can have several applications over its life. Searching by registration number shows the vehicle's current record instead: owner name (partly hidden, according to third-party guides), registration date, insurance and fitness validity, and so on. That is explained on our vehicle details guide.

So if your transfer is approved, a vehicle search will show the new owner once the record is updated, but only the application status screen tells you where a pending request is stuck. Misplaced that number? Look through the fee slip and papers you saved, or ask the RTO. Starting any new Vahan request is different again: the Odisha transport department explains that you key in the vehicle's number, the final five chassis digits and a one-time password that arrives on the phone number held in the RTO record.

An mParivahan RC check (a vehicle search inside the NextGen mParivahan app) also shows the current record, including insurance and fitness validity. It is handy on a phone, but it is not an application tracker. See our mParivahan guide for the app itself.

What each RC status stage usually means

We could not confirm the exact stage names Vahan shows, and wording may differ between states. Based on the process the Khagaria District Transport Office describes for Vahan services, a typical application passes through these steps. The first column gives our plain descriptions, not the words on the report.

Step in the processWhat it meansWhat you do
Submitted, fee paidThe form is saved and the receipt existsKeep the receipt and book an appointment if your state asks for one
Payment pendingThe bank or gateway has not confirmed the moneyWait 1 to 2 hours (varies by state), then run the pending transaction check
Awaiting verificationThe RTO has to see the documents or the vehicleVisit the RTO on the appointment date with originals
ApprovedThe registering authority has accepted the requestWait for the record and RC to update
RC printing or dispatchApplies where the state issues a smart card RCFollow your state's instructions for collection or delivery

A few requests, for example paying MV tax or viewing RC particulars, never need you at the RTO and close online. For other services, the Khagaria guidance is to take your documents to the RTO. Once approved, you can fetch a digital copy as shown on our RC download guide.

RC transfer status and ownership transfer timelines

A sale needs two steps from two people. Form 29 is the seller's intimation to the RTO, while Form 30 is what the purchaser submits to get the RC moved into their name. When an owner dies, the person succeeding to possession of the vehicle uses Form 31. Transfer of Ownership is a Vahan citizen service, so the rc transfer status can be followed on the same Vahan status screen.

Time limits in the Motor Vehicles Act

As the Act's text is commonly published, inside one state the person selling has fourteen days to tell the RTO, while the person buying has thirty (Section 50). Some published copies may predate later amendments, so confirm the current limit with your RTO.

Things that stop a transfer

  • An active loan. Hypothecation is the word for a loan where the lender keeps a legal claim on the vehicle until you repay. Section 51(4) bars the RTO from recording a transfer of a hypothecated vehicle unless the financier has agreed in writing.
  • Unpaid highway tolls. A January 2026 All India Radio report says a 2026 amendment to the central rules stops an NOC being granted for a sale or an interstate move while National Highway toll dues stay unpaid. Rules like this can change, so check the update panel above for the latest we have confirmed.

As for cost, transferring ownership is charged at half of the Rule 81 serial 4 amount for the vehicle class.

NOC status and hypothecation status

An NOC (No Objection Certificate) is issued by the registering authority so that a vehicle can be registered in another state or its ownership transferred. You apply in Form 28. In the published text of the Act, if the registering authority does not refuse the NOC within thirty days, it is deemed granted (Section 48). Section 47 deals with longer stays: after twelve months in a different state, the vehicle must be given that state's registration mark, with the NOC supporting the change.

For a loan entry, Form 34 writes the loan, lease or hire purchase deal onto the RC, and Form 35 wipes it off after the loan is closed. Odisha's transport department explains that in Vahan, termination shows a zero fee and produces Form 35; addition asks for the financier's name and address and produces Form 34. Either way, the owner prints the fee slip and the matching form and carries them to the RTO, which checks them before approving. Your status then follows the same stages as any other application.

Endorsing a loan (Rule 81 serial 9, as of October 2026)Fee
Two-wheelerRs 500
Light vehicles such as cars and autosRs 1,500
Bigger goods or passenger vehiclesRs 3,000

RC validity: 15 years, then renewal every 5 years

For a non-transport (private) vehicle, an RC lasts fifteen years from its issue date (the 1988 Act's Section 41(7)) and after that is renewed in five-year blocks (Section 41(10)). Renewal uses Form 25. The Andhra Pradesh transport FAQ advises filing it 60 days before expiry. For transport (commercial) vehicles, the same FAQ says a renewed fitness certificate counts as the registration renewal.

Missing the date costs money. Late renewal is billed by the month: each month or part month adds Rs 300 for a motorcycle and Rs 500 for any other private vehicle. An NOC sought late, whether for a sale or a house move, carries the same monthly rates. Your rc renewal status shows on the Vahan status screen like any other request.

RC renewal fees as of October 2026, including the August 2025 changes

The base amounts are fixed nationally in CMVR Rule 81 (the national motor vehicle rules). Rule 81 adds Rs 200 for a smart card RC and each state levies a service charge as well, so your receipt is usually higher than these base figures.

The August 2025 notification

GSR 568(E), the Central Motor Vehicles (Third Amendment) Rules, 2025, reworded Rule 81 serial 4B so it now covers vehicles past 15 years of age but not beyond 20, and inserted a note making every Rule 81 fee exclusive of GST. PTI's coverage of that notification said the charge to renew a vehicle past 20 years was raised: light motor vehicles from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000, motorcycles from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000, three-wheelers and quadricycles to Rs 5,000 (from Rs 3,500, a figure seen only in news reports), imported two or three-wheelers Rs 20,000 and imported four-wheelers Rs 80,000. Fees for vehicles 15 to 20 years old were reported as unchanged.

We could not read the gazette text for the 20-year amounts, so treat them as reported and confirm the figure your RTO charges before paying. The update panel above flags any later revision we confirm.

When the rc status is stuck or payment shows pending

Your money travels through three hands, Vahan, the gateway and your bank, so a slow reply can leave the transaction pending even though money left your account. Khagaria DTO's guidance is to wait 1 to 2 hours (the period varies by state) and then try the pending payment check:

  1. On the Vahan home page open Status, then Check Pending Transaction (label as reported).
  2. Give the vehicle number together with its chassis number, then press Show details.
  3. Select the transaction and click Check to Bank.
  4. If it shows as failed, apply again. If it succeeded, print the receipt.

Keep your bank reference and payment ID until the receipt prints. If the file sits at verification for long, contact the RTO that holds it. Also make sure your registered mobile number is current, since OTPs and renewal alerts go to that number; MoRTH has asked owners to refresh that number using Aadhaar-based checks (news report, October 2025).

Questions people ask

How do I check RC status on Parivahan?

Open Vahan citizen services on vahan.parivahan.gov.in, go to Status, then Know Your Application Status, and type the application number printed on the payment slip along with the captcha. The report appears after you submit. Menu names may change slightly, so follow what the screen shows.

Can I check RC status without the application number?

The application tracker needs the application number. A search by registration number shows the current vehicle record, which tells you whether, say, the buyer's name has already gone into the record, but not where a pending request is waiting. The number is on your printed fee receipt.

How long is an RC valid for a private car or bike?

Fifteen years from the day it is issued, as the Act's Section 41(7) sets out. After that, Form 25 renews it for another five years each time. Late renewal attracts a monthly late fee under Rule 81.

What is the RC renewal fee for a car older than 20 years?

Press coverage of the August 2025 notification put it at Rs 10,000 for a light motor vehicle, up from Rs 5,000, and Rs 2,000 for a motorcycle. We could not verify these amounts from the gazette text, so confirm with your RTO. A smart card adds Rs 200, states add service charges, and Rule 81 fees are exclusive of GST.

Why is my RC transfer status not moving?

Common reasons are a pending RTO visit for verification, an active loan without the financier's consent, unpaid tolls blocking an NOC, or a payment still marked pending. Check each of these, then contact the RTO that holds the file.

Is the RC of an electric vehicle free?

Since a 2021 amendment, battery operated vehicles pay no Rule 81 charge when an RC is first made or renewed, or when a new number is assigned. Road tax and state charges are separate and set by each state.
