Parivahan vehicle details are the public summary of a registration record: the vehicle's class, fuel, registration date, registering RTO and the validity of its insurance, fitness and pollution certificates, with the owner's name reported to be partly hidden. The record comes from Vahan, the vehicle registration system that NIC (National Informatics Centre) rolled out across RTOs for MoRTH, the Union transport ministry, and it can be viewed on the Parivahan site or inside NextGen mParivahan.
This is an independent guide, not the government Parivahan portal, so it has no access to vehicle records, and every search, check or application mentioned here happens only on the official Parivahan site or the official app. Search screens get redesigned from time to time; any redesign we have verified gets noted in the panel of status updates higher up.
What Know Your Vehicle Details is and where to find it
Know Your Vehicle Details is one of the four citizen services the Jammu district administration lists for Parivahan, next to licence services, vehicle services and a licence lookup. It is a read-only search. You type a vehicle registration number and see a short record. It changes nothing in the record and files no application.
People reach it in two main ways. On the web, start at the Parivahan Sewa home page and open the vehicle lookup under online services; third-party guides describe the result screen as part of Vahan. On a phone, the NextGen mParivahan app lists a vehicle search by registration number among its features. Searches like "vahan parivahan vehicle details" or "parivahan sewa vehicle details" all end up at these same two places, because both draw on the same Vahan records. A vehicle registration check online on either route is quick, and the m parivahan vehicle details screen is often the quickest on a phone. Menu wording at the time of writing comes from district and third-party sources and may change, so follow whatever your screen offers.
What a vehicle registration search shows
Two descriptions exist, and they mostly agree. A third-party guide lists what the Vahan vehicle search returns, and the App Store listing for NextGen mParivahan lists what its RC search shows.
| Field | Vahan search (as reported) | mParivahan vehicle details (store listing) |
|---|---|---|
| Owner name | Yes, partly masked | Yes |
| Registration date | Yes | Yes |
| Registering authority (RTO) | Not listed | Yes |
| Make and model, vehicle class | Not listed | Yes |
| Fuel type | Yes | Yes |
| Vehicle age | Not listed | Yes |
| Registration status and validity | Yes | Not listed |
| Insurance validity | Yes | Yes |
| Fitness validity | Not listed | Yes |
| MV tax and PUC certificate | Yes | Not listed |
"Not listed" means the source did not mention the field, not that it is missing. Insurance dates tend to be current because, as MoRTH's 2018 advisory noted, insurance data is uploaded to Vahan every day.
Why the owner's name is masked
A vehicle registration number is printed on the plate for anyone to read, so anyone who knows it can run the search. Third-party guides say the result shows the owner name only in part "for privacy reasons". We could not confirm from the portal itself how much is hidden, so treat the masking as reported, not documented.
Neither field list in the table above includes an address, phone number or Aadhaar detail. If a website or app claims to give the full parivahan vehicle owner details, including phone or address, treat it as a warning sign rather than a feature.
Using parivahan vehicle details before buying a used vehicle
A registration check takes a minute and can save a bad purchase. Run it on the number plate, then check each point with the seller's papers.
- Match the basics. Make, model, fuel and registration date should match the RC and the vehicle in front of you. Check the chassis number stamped on the vehicle against the RC yourself; the public search does not show it.
- Insurance. An expired policy means you will need fresh cover before driving away.
- PUC. A Pollution Under Control certificate is needed one year after first registration. See our PUC certificate guide for validity rules.
- Fitness. For transport vehicles, check the fitness validity. When the test is done at an automated testing station, the renewal runs through a separate Vahan module, AFMS.
- Age and RC validity. A non-transport vehicle's RC is valid for fifteen years from issue and each renewal after that runs five years, so an older vehicle may be due for renewal, and vehicles over 15 years old pay a higher renewal fee. Our RC status guide lists the renewal fees.
- Loan (hypothecation). If the RC shows a bank or finance company, Section 51(4) bars recording the sale unless the financier agrees in writing. The usual route is for the seller to close the loan and end the entry with Form 35 (notice of termination of the agreement) before the sale.
- Challans. Unpaid traffic fines do not appear in this search. Check them on the official eChallan portal using the vehicle number.
- NOC. If the vehicle will be based in a new state for more than twelve months, Section 47 requires a registration mark from that state, which needs an NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the RTO that first registered it. A 2026 central rule on unpaid highway tolls also affects NOCs, and where that rule stands today is tracked in the page's status panel.
What the search cannot tell you
- Who the owner really is. The masked name is not proof of identity. Ask for the original RC and the seller's ID and make sure they match.
- Pending traffic challans. These live in a separate eChallan system, as noted above.
- Repair, accident or service history. A registration record is not a history report and does not claim to show these.
- Whether the papers in your hand are genuine. Compare them with what the record shows. A virtual RC in mParivahan carries a QR code that, according to NIC, enforcement officers can verify offline.
- Applications in progress. A transfer or address change that is still pending appears only on the application status screen, explained on our Vahan status page.
Vehicle registration number format and the SMS lookup
A vehicle registration number is the mark on the plate that the RTO assigns. Vehicles on the voluntary Bharat (BH) series use the format YY BH #### XX instead, as reported by secondary sources; our vehicle registration guide explains who can get one. Enter the number exactly as the RC shows it.
Some third-party sites describe an SMS lookup, sending "VAHAN" followed by the registration number to 7738299899. We could not confirm that this still works, so do not rely on it. The website and app searches are the dependable routes.
MP, AP, Telangana and other state vehicle searches
Many people type a state into the search, such as an MP RTO vehicle registration owner search or an AP vehicle registration search. We found no separate national search for each state. The Vahan records are compiled into state registers and a National Register, so vehicles from RTOs on Vahan should appear in the same parivahan vehicle details search. For vehicle services (as opposed to this lookup), third-party guides note that the web route asks you to choose a state first. Whether every state, including Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, is fully on Vahan citizen services is something we could not confirm, so if a number from those states returns nothing, check with the state transport department.
Privacy cautions when looking up a vehicle
- Search for a real reason. Checking a car you plan to buy or a vehicle involved in an incident is reasonable. Tracing people through their number plate is not.
- Avoid look-up apps that sell owner data. The official search is reported to mask names, so be wary of any app that charges to reveal "full owner details". Its data cannot be checked against the official record.
- Never share an OTP. Vahan sends OTPs to the registered mobile to confirm services on your vehicle. If someone asks you to read out an OTP to "verify" a vehicle, refuse.
- Keep your own mobile number current. Alerts on challans, insurance, tax and renewals go to the number in Vahan, and a 2025 news report says MoRTH asked owners to refresh it using Aadhaar-based checks.
Every other Vahan service is covered in our Vahan 4.0 guide, and the home page lists every topic we cover.
Questions people ask
How do I check vehicle details by registration number?
Use the Know Your Vehicle Details search on the Parivahan website or the vehicle search in the NextGen mParivahan app. Enter the registration number as it appears on the RC. The result shows a short record, with the owner's name reported to be partly masked.
Can I see the full owner name and address of a vehicle?
No. Third-party guides report that the public search masks part of the owner's name, and none of the described fields include an address or phone number. Be wary of sites promising full owner details.
Does parivahan vehicle details show pending challans?
No. Traffic fines sit in the separate eChallan system. Check them on echallan.parivahan.gov.in with the vehicle number before you buy.
How do I know if a used car has a loan on it?
The RC will name the financier if a hypothecation entry exists. The sale cannot be recorded unless the financier agrees in writing, so ask the seller to close the loan and end the entry with Form 35 first.
Is the SMS VAHAN service still working?
We could not confirm it. Third-party sites describe it, but its current status is unknown, so use the website or the mParivahan app instead.
Is the mParivahan vehicle details search the same as Vahan?
Both draw on Vahan records, so the core data should match. The app's listing describes a few extra fields, such as the registering authority, vehicle class and vehicle age.
